Neurala Takes First Place in Inaugural AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards

Leader in Deep Learning Neural Networks Honored for Brains for Bots Software Development Kit

BOSTON—May 11, 2018—Deep learning neural networks company Neurala has been named a first place winner in the category of Inspection/Mapping and Surveying in the 2018 XCELLENCE Awards sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicles Systems International (AUVSI).

The AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards honor innovators in the unmanned systems industry, including individuals and organizations, with a demonstrated commitment to advancing technology; leading and promoting safe operations; and developing programs that use unmanned systems to improve the human condition.

Neurala won the award on the strength of its deep learning Brains for Bots software development kit, which assists both during and after drone flight for faster and more accurate inspections. During flight, the software can quickly identify target areas for faster, more accurate inspecting and can be taught to locate areas of damage, corrosion, cracks, and missing components. This helps pilots guide their drones and gather additional data in problem areas for further diagnosis. After flight, the software can be used to pull out key areas of interest for further inspection, reducing inspection time and fatigue.

“AI serves as a productivity multiplier for drone applications. We are proud of the contributions we are making to the unmanned vehicle industry, and honored to be recognized for them,” said Massimiliano Versace, co-founder and CEO of Neurala. “Cell towers, wind turbines, solar panels, power lines, and large infrastructure require regular inspections to operate properly, but traditional methods are slow and dangerous. Drones have improved safety conditions, but are limited to recording. Our AI technology allows drones to learn and respond as they go, providing operations teams with the data they need and dramatically increasing efficiency.”

“The unmanned systems industry is innovating at an incredible rate and creating tremendous benefits for our economy, lifestyle and society,” said Brian Wynne, president and CEO of AUVSI. “The AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards recognize the companies and individuals who are propelling the industry into the future.”
