Neurala and Extreme Fliers Raise The Bar in Consumer Drones With AI-powered Micro Drone 4.0

Powered by Neurala’s award-winning AI, Extreme Fliers’ Micro Drone 4.0 will provide consumers with an adaptable and affordable drone unlike any options on the market today

BOSTON – February 27, 2019Neurala announced today that its award-winning artificial intelligence has been embedded into Extreme Fliers’ recently released Micro Drone 4.0. By leveraging Neurala’s patented AI, which will run on the smart phone controlling the drone, the Micro Drone 4.0 will be able to understand its surroundings and react to objects it encounters in real time.

“We are building Neurala’s industry-leading AI into our Micro Drone to provide, for the first time, sophisticated ‘brains’ to mass-produced consumer drones,” said Vernon Kerswell, CEO of Extreme Fliers. “We recently reached 10x our initial funding goal on our Indiegogo campaign, meaning that this entirely new category of drone will soon be available to consumers. Through deploying at scale, Neurala and Extreme Fliers will deliver a truly affordable and powerful AI-enabled drone.”

Neurala’s AI will power Micro Drone 4.0’s controlling software, enabling real-time analysis of the drone’s environment by leveraging the smart phone’s compute power. In turn, the drones will be able to perceive, localize, and react differentially to people and objects in their environment, unlocking fun and useful features that are largely unavailable in consumer drones on the market today, and are typically cost-prohibitive.

Extreme Fliers, the London based Drone development company, selected Neurala’s AI technology from a pool of companies, ranging from tech giants to startups. With the only AI on the market that is purpose-built for real-time use cases leveraging everyday consumer devices, Neurala’s software will be a key partner in putting intelligent drones into the hands of everyday users.

“We’re extremely proud to partner with Extreme Fliers, to bring this new category of drone to life,” said Dr. Massimiliano Versace, CEO and co-founder of Neurala. “We see this application as yet another way to broaden the reach of AI into everyday use cases, such as consumer drones. We expect that putting Neurala’s AI in the hands of tens of thousands of drone owners worldwide will not only deliver a unique and enhanced user experience, but also raise awareness of how AI-powered machines can co-exist with people and augment our lives in a fun and productive way – without draining your bank account.”

Neurala has developed the only commercially available AI software that enables not only inference, but also learning to occur on the device. Today, Neurala’s software has shipped on millions of consumer devices, bringing powerful AI to people’s fingertips through smart phone deployments, and now consumer drone users.

While most AI solutions on the market require substantial compute power and considerable training data and time, Neurala’s patented technology runs and learns directly at the compute edge at a fraction of the time and training data, bypassing the need to connect to the cloud. This feature enables edge devices such as smart phones and drones to perceive and learn new information on low-cost consumer devices, effectively enabling widespread deployment and adoption of AI.

 About Neurala

Neurala developed The Neurala Brain—deep learning neural network software that makes devices and products like drones, mobile phones and cameras more intelligent, engaging and useful. Neurala provides customized solutions ranging from high-end applications to inexpensive everyday products. With The Neurala Brain and an ordinary camera, products can learn people and objects, recognize them in a video stream, find them in the video, and track them as they move. The Neurala Brain is based on technology originally developed for NASA, DARPA and the U.S. Air Force and is now deployed commercially on over a million smart devices.
